I'm in Denver right now...

...in case you were wondering. Last night in Omaha was cool. I'll write more later, I have to go to the bathroom now.

Buffalo, Huntington, Detroit, Chicago

I'm quite behind in the posting thing. Sorry about that. Here we go:

Buffalo: We played in a skate park. This would have been really cool if I knew how to skate. The show went well, people were generally into it. We didn't really get to see much of Buffalo. After the show we drove to Niagara Falls. We walked across the border into Canada, which has a better view. About 3/4 of the way to the cool place to check out the falls it started pouring rain and we ran back to the van. Canada pissed on us.

Huntington, WV: The "club" was a big puck rock warehouse. I had fun trying to act professional while talking on the phone to business clients during an unexpected fireworks show provided by some show patrons. A crew of fans drove 2 hours to come see us play and got there during the last song. The sound was bad in the warehouse, but tolerable.

Detroit: I love cities that have smoke shooting out of every manhole in addition to what's coming out of the giant smokestacks surrounding you. There is always entertainment in Detroit because you are constantly swarmed by witty homeless people. The club, called The Shelter, was quite cool: decent size room, good sound, big backroom for us to hang out in, and free food, beer and water. The show was fun, the repetition of playing every night is starting to show in our playing.

Chicago: I like Chicago, but this was the worst show so far. Nobody was there. It sucked. Amanda Cranswick (actually Huffer now) and Andy came out - I ditched the band for the first time and went out and had drinks with them after the show. That was fun. We stayed with Bob Mehr, thanks Bob. He has the promo for the new Wilco album, it's pretty cool. I think it's one that will take a few listens to sink in, but will last.

We're headed to Minneapolis now. We're going to stay with Pete from Pine Wyatt and Aquanaut Drinks Coffee. Brent from the Ballad Of will coincidentally also be there tonight. Weird. It's an ironlemon convention. Everyone is invited.

Reuben's Accomplice has made a powerful enemy by not stopping in Philadelphia. Diffs never forget!!!

Reubens Accomplice fears Real Diffs

There is an old saying for a touring band and that is Never get off the boat. You saw what happened to everyone who got off the boat in Apocalypse Now, didn't you? Amanda and Huffer should have taken a back seat to or in the Boat!!

Reuben's may think they're hot shit on china but they're actually cold tirds on a paper plate. The diffs could soo beat up the accomplices. Go Get 'em Ryan!!

Danbury

The club in Danbury has a ridiculous 200 ft. high ceiling, which looks cool, but makes it sound like shit. They also put "the new girl" on the sound board, and that didn't help. Here's an excerpt from the sound check (which was right before we went on, while everyone was watching):

New Girl, after checking bass, drums, guitars and vocals: "Ok. Go ahead and play."
Me, Pointing at the big ass keyboard on stage: "What about this."
New Girl: "Ok. Keyboards."
I then proceeded to play the keyboard, which could be sort of heard from my little amp I brought, but not through the PA or monitors at all.
New Girl: "Ok got it."
Me: "I don't hear it."
New Girl: "Ok play again."
I then shut off my amp so I could be sure I could hear the sound in the club. All I heard was some quiet grumbling from the annoyed patrons.
New Girl: "Ok got it. Go ahead and play."
Me: "I don't hear any keyboards."
New Girl: "Ok hold on. Got it. Go ahead."
Me: "Actually I don't think you have it. There are no keyboard sounds coming out of any speaker in this venue."
Keep in mind I'm talking through the microphone so everyone in the club can hear this conversation.
New Girl: "Um...."

Then a bunch of people came up on stage and messed around with cables for a long time. After that the keyboards worked, except that New Girl would randomly mute them while I was playing.

Despite the bad sound, the show went pretty well. There was a decent crowd and they bought lots of CDs.

I'm passing over the Hudson River right now (on a bridge, in a van). We are headed to Buffalo. Only three-hundred and sixty miles to go.

Baltimore

Baltimore is hot. We ate dinner at Chili's in a shopping center that could have been anywhere in the country.

It's actually quite depressing how homogeneous everywhere in the country is. Let's take in a 360 degree panorama from the center of Times Square: the Olive Garden, Applebees, McDonald's, Chili's, Red Lobster, Friday's, Virgin... the Chili's we ate at just outside of Baltimore has the same line up surrounding it.

To be fair, Times Square is kind of stupid. There are much cooler places to be in New York that don't have all that shit. I just wish the rest of the country could copy the cool parts.

We're on the way to Danbury, CT. We are playing the a place called the Empress Ballroom. Come by if your in the area.

Just drove past another Walgreens.

Oh yeah, last nights show was fun. The club we played at was actually pretty cool. Not a lot of people there, but that's ok.

show #2 in NJ

Hmmmm... where is everybody? This show was pretty dead. We played well though, which is always nice. It was a 15 mile drive that took an hour and a half to get to. Driving in New York is fun.

No show tonight, so we just walked around New York today. Rode the Staten Island Ferry, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, ate good food and stood on subways. Neat.

We're going to go out tonight, I should have something exciting to report back about that.

I have pictures but they're too big. You'll just have to wait until I make them smaller tomorrow.

the Reubens accomplice show in NYC

The lights were blinding me on stage, so it was hard to tell exactly who was screaming things like "Navajo Nation!" and "Oh the Night!" and "Mardi Gras!", but between that and some fuck yeah's there was definitely an excited crowd last night. The Knitting Factory is pretty cool, except when you have to carry giant 100 lb guitar amps up and down two flights of stairs through a sweaty mob of people.

I'm writing this in Aaron Linnen's living room, for those of who might care to know.

Now were off our next show in New Jersey. It's 20 minutes away.

missouri

I'm in Missouri riding in the van. I have eaten; things are looking up. There's weird stuff here like grass and trees. I'm feeling really boring now so I'm going to stop writing.

so how are you posting this stuff? are you like parking outside of starbucks for a few minutes to leech their wireless connection? p.s. you should urinate on a national treasure when in washington in order to create publicity for the band. the vietnam war memorial comes to mind as an ideal site for this. joe

I have a Sprint cell phone internet card in my laptop. I have unlimited internet that's a little bit faster than dialup pretty much everywhere, including the whole time we're driving in the van.

Hey Ryan,
I got the new Burma record. They haven't missed a missed beat. Took me back to The Los Angeles show. I wouldn't piss on the Viet Nam Memorial. Go for something like Montecello or The former residence of say...Edgar Allen Poe

I want to fly to Hawaii and piss on Martin Swope's Echoplex.

I'm hungry

Reubens Accomplice has me trapped in the van with no food. Please help me. They won't let me do anything I want to do. They are so mean to me.

We are in New Mexico now. I put the road atlas under the laptop so I'm not burning.

and we're off!

I am writing this post from the van, on I-17, just past mile marker 217, while traveling at 70 mph. We are headed to NYC.

I have a feeling I will be leaving quite a few posts during this 35+ hour drive.

This laptop is burning my legs. I must devise a contraption of some sort to remedy this situation. I'll be right back.

Reubens Accomplice is playing tonight at the Marquee in Tempe. Go.

Tomorrow we leave for tour... the first show is in NYC on Tuesday.

I need some new shoes. Mine are really old.

Anyway, I'm planning on posting as often as possible while on the road. I look forward to you reading the things that I write. Some of the things will be extremely important so be sure to check ironlemon for updates every 30 seconds.

the Reubens Accomplice tour

There's been some changes in the lineup of the Reubens tour. Watashi Wa has cancelled. A band called Brazil will playing with us on the first part of the tour, and I think someone else on the later parts. I'll let you know later when I find out more info.

I'm going to put up a list of all the shows sometime today. There's already a list at the Reubens Accomplice website if you can't wait.

There's also some other changes coming up... we lost some shows in the northwest, so we are routing ourselves through Omaha and Denver or something. I'm not sure exactly when or where yet. Maybe I should wait to post until I actually know some real information.

I'm just trying to give you a heads up. You don't need to be so weird about it.

Thanks Ryan,
I was getting concerned about the gap between Omaha (great collegiate baseball scene) and Denver (great omelette). Let me know as soon as possible as I need to pack my things. The train schedule is tricky and I don't want to zig-zag like last time. I did meet some nice people though.

Ironlemon now has comments on each post. So, feel free to reply, but don't be stupid. You know what I mean.

There are some other new features I'll be playing around with in the next few days as well. They should help get the new Aquanaut Drinks Coffee page rollin'.

Damn, I'm busy. Sorry, no time to write anything cool. Or not cool. I guess this is not cool, so I do have time to write something that is not cool, actually. I at least have time to thoroughly analyze and critique my lack of the resource called "time", and how it effects my ability to write intensely informative and powerful posts here on ironlemon. Do to lack of time, I will now jump immediately to my postulation:

The amount of time it takes to write a post about the time it takes to write a post may or may not be inversely proportional to the time it takes to write said post.

Also, today is my birthday, which also may or may not effect "time", hurrah, happy birthday to me.

last night's show

The Ballad Of show last night went fairly well, considering we had rearranged all of the songs to accommodate the lack of a bass player in a week. Thanks to all that attended. That was my last The Ballad Of show for a little while as I am going out on the road with the Reubens Accomplice. Don't cry, the band already has some other people lined up to fill in for me, quite possibly creating a better listening experience than might be had with myself playing. Go see the next The Ballad Of show on the 16th of May at the Emerald Lounge to find out.
